Testing Mission Control: The IoT Test Family 🦾

You’re in charge of a fleet of robots scattered across the country: smart meters, delivery drones, weather sensors. None of them have screens or buttons. You control them all from one place: Mission Control. But how do you know Mission Control actually works before the robots go into the field? You test it first: with practice drills, fake robots, and pretend emergencies.

That’s exactly what SGP.33 does for the eSIM world of IoT (Internet of Things) devices. It’s the test family that makes sure the remote command centres for tiny robot eSIMs work perfectly.


The Three Test Teams 👷‍♀️

SGP.33 is actually three test specifications working together:

SGP.33-1 Robot Trainer Tests the on-board helper inside each robot (the IPA)
SGP.33-2 Key Maker Tester Tests the server that builds digital keys (SM-DP+)
SGP.33-3 Mission Control Tester Tests the remote command centre itself (the eIM)

Each one focuses on a different piece of the puzzle. Together, they make sure the whole IoT eSIM system works before any real robot goes live.


Why Robots Need Special Tests 🤖

You can’t hand a delivery drone a QR code! So the testing has to work differently too.


What’s Under the Microscope? 🔬

SGP.33-3 (our focus) tests the eUICC IoT Manager : the “eIM” for short. Think of it as:

Mission Control for robots : the remote server that tells each robot which mobile network to use, switches their profiles on and off, and keeps everything running smoothly.

The eIM never touches a robot directly. It sends orders through secure channels, receives reports back, and coordinates with key makers and post offices behind the scenes.


How They Test Mission Control 🎯

Instead of using a real robot fleet (too expensive, too risky!), testers use simulators:

S_SM-DS A fake Post Office: pretends to hold messages
S_eUICC A fake robot vault: pretends to store profiles
S_IPA A fake on-board translator: pretends to be the robot’s helper

Mission Control (the real eIM) sits in the middle, talking to these simulators as if they were real. If everything works, the eIM passes. If not: back to the engineering team!


The Interfaces: How They Talk 📡

Four special channels connect everything:

Each channel has its own set of test cases to make sure messages arrive correctly.


SGP.33-3 is the youngest of the three test specs: many tests are still marked “FFS” (For Future Study). The eIM didn’t even exist in consumer eSIM! It’s entirely new territory, and the testing methodology is still being built out by the GSMA.
